My
Background
I am proud to have
served as your Trustee in District E since 2005. Since moving to Las
Vegas , my family and I have lived in the same neighborhood for the
past 14 years giving me the wonderful opportunity to intimately
understand the needs of our area and working to make our community
safe and improve our children’s education.
Since being elected to
this position, my experience in the Clark County School District
includes serving on the Bond Oversight Committee which oversees funds
that are earmarked to build new schools and rehabilitate current
facilities. As your watchdog on this committee, I ensure the District
is accountable for every tax dollar and that the money is being used
prudently. I also serve on the Empowerment Design Team which selects
the next generation of empowerment schools from a considerable list of
applications. The No Child Left Behind Act is an important policy that
helps address the needs of every student in Clark County . Moreover,
this committee serves as a paradigm for each individual school so that
they may have a framework in order to more easily attain their
individual campus goals. Last year, of the top ten school districts
in the country,
the Clark County School District was the only one
to make AYP (Annual Yearly Progress).
I
provide leadership to the District’s School Improvement team which is
charged with implementing an
overall plan
for the district to meet the requirements of this important act.
Proudly, I work on other committees that address the needs of the
education community and help build stronger partnerships with the local
business community and non-profit organizations.
Prior to being elected, I served on the PTA for over 7 years and
represented parents on the NW-REAB, which is an advisory board that reports parent and
community concerns to administrators in the district and
provides recommendations on how these issues can be resolved. This year
I was honored with a National PTA Lifetime Achievement award on behalf
of my work for children.
I am also an active
member of the School Safety Action Committee (SSAC). I work closely
with Metro's NW Area Command, Metro Gang Unit and CCSD Police in order
to improve school safety for every student. During my short tenure as
your School Board Trustee, I have fought for fair pay for all CCSD
police officers. I understand the importance of having
competitive pay with other law enforcement agencies so we can attract
and retain the best officers who will be protecting our children.
I strongly believe in
accountability at every level of the School District . From that
belief,
the Quality Assurance Framework was created. This tool empowers
the Superintendent to find creative solutions to address the Districts
biggest challenges and holds the
Superintendent responsible for the implementation and outcome of new
teaching methodologies that are implemented in the classroom.
I also have fought for
increased salaries for our teachers and advocated for better leadership
training for every teacher. They are the front line and must be
effective in the classroom, or our children’s education will suffer.
Throughout my
involvement in education I have advocated for lifelong wellness for
students in our schools, receiving a nomination for the Public Health
Week Hero award from the Southern Nevada Health Department. My
involvement with Action for Healthy Kids was instrumental in improving &
implementing healthier nutritional
standards for students throughout the district. Currently I
am volunteering with Vegas PBS on a national grant program called
Keeping Kids Fit. http://www.VegasPBS.org/KeepingKidsFit
Since 2002, I have
served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) representing foster children
in the court system. In 2004, I was
awarded the CASA Outstanding Service Award.
In addition, I served on the CASA Foundation Board of Trustees from 2001
through 2003 and on the board of the Shade Tree Shelter from 1995-2001.
For the past 5 years I have served as a member of the Southern Nevada
Domestic Violence Task Force.
Since moving to Las
Vegas , I have worked hard at the
most important career: a stay-at-home Mom to our 2 children.
Since being elected, though, I have made my service to all students in
District E as my full time job. I have thoroughly enjoyed representing
your family and advocating on behalf of teachers and parents in the
County.
I thank you for your
continued support of my candidacy, and would encourage you to call or
e-mail me if you would like to discuss my platform or your ideas on how
we can improve education in Southern Nevada .
